The Network Is the Battlefield

Toryn: Rootkit

Genre: Tactical Deckbuilding Roguelike

Status: Planned

Earth, the 2050s. Corporate networks are the new front line, and you break into them one operation at a time. Every card is a hacking operation played directly onto a live network graph: scan, exploit, take root, extract the Intel. The corporation shows you what it is about to do and spends real budget to take its nodes back. Get the data out before Trace burns the operation.

Features

Topology is the board

Servers, routers, gateways, databases and firewalls form a real network graph, and that graph is the battlefield. There are no health bars: you win by controlling infrastructure.

Which node you take next decides which card you want to play. There is more than one way to the database, and the best route changes with your hand and with what the corporation does.

Compromise, then take root

A compromised node is a foothold the corporation can still take back. Hold it and it becomes Rooted: it feeds you RAM, the capacity every operation runs on, and it costs far more to reclaim.

So every turn asks the same question: push deeper, or defend what you already hold?

Trace is the clock

Every loud move raises Trace. As it climbs, the corporation answers harder, and at 10 the operation burns.

Covering your tracks is possible, but it costs a card and a turn. A slower, cleaner play is often the stronger one.

An opponent you can read

The corporation shows its intent before it acts and pays for every response from a visible security budget: reclaiming nodes, purging your daemons, locking down routes.

No hidden dice decide a fight. You plan around what the defense is about to do, and make it spend its budget where you want it to.

One run, one prize

A run is one intrusion into a corporation across several operations, ending in its core network, where the prize file sits.

Heat follows you from operation to operation. A loud win now can cost you the run later.
